I was digging through some old paperwork today and found a page I wrote during the very first Canberra IA Cocktail hour - way back in 2002.
It was a list of topics we wanted to discuss. This is what we wanted to talk about back then:
- Storytelling
- What is KM?
- Deliverables
- wireframes
- site maps
- personas and scenarios
- Faceted classifications
- Content management systems
- Creating controlled vocabularies
- Data modelling
- Difference between websites and intranets
It makes me think of how much has changed in that time. 5 years ago we were all talking about day-to-day, tactical challenges. In recent months we’ve talked about much more theoretical and strategic topics.
What do you think? What should we be talking about now?
I think we’ve grown up somewhat — much of this list is about doing and I think we’ve sorted out this issue and moved on.
Now we have to struggle more with conceptual ideas as we start to be (more and more) used sooner in these web processes rather than later.
Perhaps we’re being employed as IA’s now to answer why and how and guiding those who do the doing.

I agree. That’s what grabbed me when I found this piece of paper.
